  • 2003 International ESRI User Conference- Sunday (Day 1)

The ESRI User Conference -- On Sunday, July 6, the 2003 ESRI kicked off with a number of special interest seminars and educational sessions. In addition, the first Survey & GIS Summit took place. Mike Weir of ESRI hosted the event billed as "Bridging the Gap" - an educational about integrating technologies and strategies about training, promoting, educating, learning, and building partnerships that serve to bridge the gap between surveyors and GIS.

Weir and staff informed the estimated 260 attendees of this, the first Survey & GIS summit that the event was planned from start to finish in just a matter of months. The objective was to provide a focused event over a 3 day period that touched on bridging the gap between surveyors and the GIS group. Day 1 featured speakers and sessions that focused on the integration of GIS and surveying in projects from various industries and government sectors. Day 2 overlaps with the UC as the conference keynote and plennary session. Day 3 is a complete day of conference tracks , technical workshops, and moderated paper sessions.

Of the 260 attendees, 86% were from the US, the remainder were International delegates. Sectors represented by attendees include private (57%), Federal Gov't (11%), and local government (32%). It was interesting to note that the industry make up of attendees was split down the middle, 43% being from the surveying community, and 43% from the GIS industry. The remainder were mostly engineers and educators.

During the morning session Weir made an interesting statement that in the future, relational databases, and in particular, the geodatabase would be composed of three main kinds of data; raster, vector, and suvey data! A rather bold projection, however, I felt his prediction set the tone for the signifigance and the importance that he [and ESRI] is placing on surveying and in particular, the efforts that will be required by the industry to bridge the gap between surveyors and GIs professionals.
